A couple of weeks ago on a rainy Saturday, Chris and I decided to take a trip into London. It’s been a while since we made it into the city, and although we didn’t really have any plans to see anything, thought it could be a fun day out. We headed in early and walked around the Natural History Museum for a little bit until it became ridiculously busy as everyone else clearly had the same idea! So then we headed over to Soho and decided to try and find somewhere for a bit of lunch. When then found Ping Pong, tucked away towards Carnaby Street, and thought it sounded quite interesting and decided to give it a go.
Neither of us have had Dim Sum before, but we both enjoy Chinese and Japanese type food, so thought it sounded pretty good. Luckily once we were seated the waiter explained it all to us, and that you typically order 4 dishes per person, and that everything comes out as it’s ready. So we both ordered a cocktail while we had a look through the menu, mine came with a hibiscus flower in the ice cube and a beaker of soda to add to it!
The first couple of things that arrived were the chilli pork tender loin, prawn toast with sesame seeds, and the char sui bun. I found the char sui bun really chewy, but oh my god the pork tender lion was amazing. The chilli packed quite a punch, so perfect if you like your spicy food. The prawn toast wasn’t quite what I what I was expecting, I was thinking it would be more like your traditional prawn toast you get in Chinese restaurants, but it was still lovely all the same.
I like that the food came out as it was ready, as when we’d finished the first three dishes, the other four came, great timing! Next we had the pulled pork and and yuzu spring roll, the tofu mushroom and black bean rice pot, the beef gyoza dumpling, and the duck spring roll. I wasn’t dead keen on the rice pot, mostly because I’m not the biggest mushroom fan, but the spring rolls and gyoza’s were wonderful.
Somehow after all the food we ate, we still had room for dessert, and both ordered the yuzu match finger cake. And of course there was more room for cocktails, and we had the hidden Chinese zombie cocktail to share. It was a great cocktail, but we did look a bit silly sharing this at lunch time!
I’m pleased I tried out Ping Pong, and my first experience with Dim Sum was a rather tasty one! Have you ever had Dim Sum or been to Ping Pong? What did you think?
