Top Tips For Staying Safe This Summer*

Hurrah the sun is finally starting to come out! Gone are the days where I was still having to wear a coat to work, and sleep with a blanket on my bed, and now I’m starting to dig out my summer clothes and spend my afternoons sat in the sunshine. I love summer time, everyone just seems to be in better moods because of the sunshine, and it’s a great time to get out of the house and be a little more active. Although summer is a great time to get out in the sunshine, you also need to make sure that you’re safe, so I thought I’d share a few tips.

Wear suncream – Probably the most obvious tip for summer. I’m always nagging my friends to make sure they’re wearing their suncream, and to make sure they reapply it every few hours. I think I drive them mad! Not only does it protect you from getting burnt, but it can also protect your skin from getting any future damage from the sun. As I’m ghostly pale the minute I go out in the sun I seem to turn pink, so I like to make sure I’m extra careful if I’m out all day in the sun.

Stay hydrated – Staying hydrated is really important in the summer, especially when it gets really hot. Once the sun is out I’m always tempted to sit out in a pub garden somewhere drinking cocktails, which actually can be extremely dehydrating. Make sure you have plenty of water to drink, I like to add pieces of fruit or cucumber to mine to make it taste more interesting.

Protect your eyes – protecting your eyes is likely to be thing that’s forgotten in the summer. Once upon a time I used to buy huge cheap sunglasses from Primark and spend all summer wearing them, but really they didn’t give my eyes much protection. Since I’ve realised how harmful the sun can be I’ve invested in a decent pair of sunglasses from SCLO to protect my eyes this summer. They also make prescription sunglasses, so if you’re a glasses or contact lens wearer there’s no excuses for you either!

Wear a hat – This is something I always forget to do, and then immediately regret it once I burn my scalp. It’s recommended that you wear a hat in the height of summer, not only to protect your scalp from burning, but also to prevent getting heatstroke.

Avoid the hottest point of the day – During UK summer the hottest part of the day is usually between 11am and 3pm. It might not always be possible, but if your shadow is shorter than you are, then it’s best to stick to the shade.
Hopefully these tips will be helpful this summer! After all no one wants to ruin their summer by getting badly burnt or by having sunstroke.
